Groundhogs tend to prefer areas with loose, sandy soil as they can easily dig burrows and create dens for themselves. Dense forests and heavily wooded areas may provide too much of an obstacle for digging, while cedar swamps may not provide enough room for a burrow. Additionally, other types of soil, such as clay, do not provide the same ease of digging as sandy soil. Thus, sandy soil is the preferred cover for groundhogs.
